Strong emphasis is placed on the camera, film processing, and print development. The class uses a 35mm manual camera. Photography classes at this community college were state of the art. I learned how to operate a manual camera as well as manipulate chemicals and enlargers to create a desirable photograph. Electronic Imaging, a hands-on course in Adobe Photoshop.
PSY203 and PSY204 = PSYC101 and PSYC300 at APU – Introduction to Psychology I and General Psychology II: Research Methods - PSY203, the student becomes familiar with human behavior and mental states. The course teaches the study of learning perception, cognition, intelligence, social influences, psychological disorders, and physiological changes. PSY204, A deeper understanding of the first course, there is a focus on experiments and research methods. These two courses helped me to understand human behavior. The research methods were more memorable as we were taught how difficult data collection can be and how challenging research studies are to conduct.
ENG101 = ENGL110 at APU – Composition I – A course designed to prepare students to establish clear, well-developed, well organized writing with a strong focus on grammar. This course provided a foundation, as my writing skills developed over the course of my academic career.
COM101 – Oral Communications – A course studying the concepts of human communication. This course helps the student develop skills to become an effective communicator. A course necessary to help develop relationships in the working environment.
MAT109 = MATH111 at APU – Foundations of Algebra, Trigonometry and Geometry – A problem solving math class teaches the foundations of algebra, trigonometry and geometry. A class designed to help develop problem solving skills that are needed as the curriculum progresses.
BIO109 and BIO110 = BIOL133 and BIOL134 at APU- Principles of Biology I and II – A two sequenced course designed for science majors. BIO109 teaches basic biology concepts, beginning at the molecular level. BIO110, a continuation of 109, teaches life of an organism, both plant and animal. Labs include dissection of vertebrates and invertebrates. The lectures and the labs helped to form my very strong foundation that was necessary to move further in a science-based program. I was fortunate enough to have the chair of the department as my professor, he was outstanding.
CHE107 = CHEM133 at APU – An introduction to chemistry with a lab. This course includes the fundamental math and physics skills required to understand basic chemistry, fusing the sciences for a healthy cross-curriculum. The study of atomic/molecular weight, mole concepts, solution, stoichiometry and gas laws. Chemistry is abstract and most times non-visual, which is challenging for most. Chemistry helped me to learn formulas and math that I have never done before while applying the math to the labs.
PHY101 – PHYS133 at APU – General Physics I – Introductory class to physics with lab. Using fundamental kinematics, Newton’s Laws of motion, circular motion and gravitation, work and energy, impulse and momentum, simple harmonic motion, heat and thermodynamics. The favorite of all of my lab sciences. Initially this class was taken for a fish and wildlife degree. Physics is the basis for many other sciences. Application in the lab is visual, which helps to create a firmer understanding of the material.
BIOL 250/251 – Anatomy and Physiology I & II – Two course sequence with labs, focusing on the organization of human anatomy and physiology. Course includes areas from homeostasis and cell biology to genetics and heredity. All of the systems of the human body are studied with great depth. An extension of the biology classes, I learned in-depth knowledge of each system within the human body, the structure of each and how they function alone and together. The dissections and the labs helped to pull of my prior classes together.
SPHE295 and SPHE320 – Foundations of Nutrition and Nutrition – SPHE295, an introduction course to the principles of nutrition and the functions that nutrients have on the human body. SPHE320, the second portion of a nutrition sequence, places emphasis on healthy diets, and how diet may help prevent illnesses as well how it is important for athletic performance. These two courses allowed me to recognize the value of a true healthy diet and how to help others implement a healthy diet.
SPHE421 – Kinesiology – A study of human movement and the neuromuscular system. The study of movement with regards to athletic performance, rehabilitation and exercise. An essential class for health science majors. A full understanding of the physiological and biomechanical responses of the human body to exercise.
SPHE314 – Exercise Physiology – A study of how the body changes physiologically during exercise, post activity and during training. A focus on efficiency and limitations is addressed. An important course to help identify how the internal body reacts to the external environment.
SPHE405 – Sports First Aid – A course demonstrating how to administer first aid in a sports setting. Proper techniques are taught along with basic first aid to help athletes who get injured during training or an event. This class helped me to expand on my current CPR/AED and First Aid certification knowledge.
SPHE420 – Exercise Programming and Testing – Using NASM’s OPT model along with knowledge obtained in prior courses, this course demonstrates how to use skills in a professional setting. Tools such as assessments and questionnaires help to determine and design safe effective programs for each individual. The finale of the core classes was paramount in learning how to assess and design programs for clients. After this class, I developed the confidence needed to work with the general population.
SPHE315 – Training and Conditioning – A study of muscle growth and how the growth influences the human body. This course helps students with designing, managing and analyze training and conditioning with regards to the human body. One of many classes in the curriculum to aid in the designing of safe programs for individuals.
SPHE461 – Current Issues and Trends Fitness and Wellness – Teaches the student how to study and learn how to evaluate the growing health and wellness industry. A class designed to navigate through a fairly new industry.
PSYC460 – Sports Psychology – The study of human behavior with regards to exercise and sports. An academic focus on factors like personality, why people exercise, motivation, adherence, stress and anxiety with relation to physical activity. A great class to learn motivational interviewing while creating realistic and relevant goals for individuals.
MA23 = MATH302 at APU – Statistics – Learning methods of statistics to analyze and problem solve. I was able to identify patterns and interpret data that can be used in many other classes as a science major.
PBHE209 – Wellness: Health Promotion and Disease Prevention – This course the concepts of wellness and how wellness is multi-dimensional. In addition, the course guides the student about health literacy and adherence. I solidified my passion for helping others reach their goals using safe and effective vehicles.
PBHE315 – Health Economics and Finance – The study of how economics impacts the healthcare industry. The relevancy of this topic in 2020 cannot be overstated. I discovered there is tremendous complexity and stress on the healthcare system in the United States.
PBHE427 – Epidemiology – The basic concepts of epidemiology are taught, and how to deal with the issues in public health. This class helped put into perspective the delicate nature and vulnerability of the health of the global population.
